Here are a few things to get you started

What is DevOps?

DevOps is a word which originated in a conference held at Belgium in year 2009. The organisers of the conference wanted to name the conference as devopsdays as they wanted to organise this conference for few days explore ideas of making developer and operations teams work better together in IT industry. The DevOps word therefore generally refers to a methodology of making developers and operations people work together better.

However, in these days, devops refers to all kinds of automations to make IT operations work in most optimized timeframe, so that IT operations does not add up any significant time delay in the process of releasing a software than what is absolutely necessary.

Who are the operations people in DevOps?

Operations people are systems administrators, network administrators, storage administrators and other people involved in running IT operations on a day to day basis. This is a set of all the people other than developers, in the IT industry.

What is the role of Operations People in DevOps?

Operations people have been working on tasks that are typically methodical i.e. there are defined steps for working on it. Unlike developers where they have to learn a language and then create something artistic like a new software from it (much like you write an essay after learning English language). When people decided to look for optimizations across the fields of development and operations, they found operations work to be an easier target considering automation could easily replace the manually executed methods. Whereas producing creative software is not something that can be easily automated. Hence operations work became a soft target for optimization in the combined workflow among developers and operations. Which in turn is making traditional operations job descriptions invalid in current day and age.

Hence operations people have forget about being a domain expert of linux, windows, cisco, emc, hp, mainframe etc. and have to be become a true operations person who can develop automations to manage every component of IT operations ranging from servers, storages and network.

What are the typical team structures of DevOps?

In devops there are total 5 patterns seen:
1. An independent devops team completely separate from developers and operations teams
2. A newly formed devops subgroup within developer team
3. A newly formed devops subgroup within operations team
4. A common mixed team of selected developers and operations people to lead the company into devops adoption
5. All people are devops people with very few people who can be called only developer or only operations people.

Among these, 5th option is the nirvana situation where everyone wants to be

Typically however it starts with 2 or 3 and gradually moves to become 4

And when a devops initiative is taken up by the CXO level exec, then they may go for either 1 or 4

What is the market size of DevOps?

As per published reports, the DevOps Market would attain market size of $8,763.8 million by 2023, growing at a CAGR of 18% during 2017 -2023.

It does not matter, because after a few years, the only skillset that will be asked by an employer is going to be devops. They will not hire dedicated sysadmins, netadmins or storage admins. Just ask any linux administrator friend of yours. They cant get a job nowadays without knowing devops. And its not only their story, they are rather fortunate to get into this early. Tomorrow they will start eating up your job.

Is it required for developers to know devops?

Developers are also being asked to know devops as companies are gradually trying to handover control of operations to people who can code. And obviously therefore developers can easily get into this. And whosoever gets in, obviously gets early mover advantage.

What is DevOps.ORG.IN ?

DevOps.ORG.IN is a website formed by a group of passionate IT industry professionals who have intentions to make Indian workforce devops ready. It is after all a matter of survival.

As we keep on delaying in becoming devops ready, smaller startups and established players in US, UK, EU and Australia are gradually growing their business. Earlier they could not compete with Indian companies as we had the edge of having cheaper and better labour force. Now with automation in picture, they have got a level playing field. They can provide few people armed with lot of automation to take away our jobs.
